Australia New South Wales Government Railways Accident Cranes =========================================== Version 1.0 Files are date/time-stamped June 2010 1.00 ============================================ Original design and textures by Brian Bere-Streeter Email : shortnorth@eftel.net.au ============================================ Contents: 1. Model details 2. Installation Notes 3. Prototype Notes 4. Copyright, Distribution and Terms of Use ======================================= 1. Model Details ---------------- 3D Models created with Train Sim Modeler by Brian Bere-Streeter Textures by Brian Bere-Streeter These models are for your personal use only, and may not be sold or distributed in any way without the creators' permission. The following models are provided in this pack: - 15ton Cowans-Sheldon hand accident crane - 30ton Cowans-Sheldon steam accident crane - 30ton Craven Brothers steam accident crane - 35ton Ransomes and Rapier steam accident crane - 70ton Craven Brothers steam accident crane I have deliberatly not numbered these cranes, so that the one model of each type can represent the different cranes placed at various locations throughout the system. ======================================== 2. Installation Notes ---------------------- Double click on the self installing EXE file and follow the instructions. The models will be automatically installed in a new folder << AU_NSWGR_AccidentCranes >>. One consist (a typical accident crane train) has been installed in the Consists folder, for each individual crane - these use a combination of existing locomotives available as separate downloads from various MSTS sites. Suitable 'static' consists (without locos) could also be made for these cranes and the accident train, and placed in suitable locations in the various routes for use with custom Activities pertaining to those routes. To design additional consists of your own, use the Consist Editor. A tutorial for this may be found at http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/ ============================================ 3. Prototype Notes -------------------- From the earliest days of the NSWGR there was a requirement for rail mounted cranes to be used for accidents, breakdowns and 'internal' railway general purpose heavy lift jobs, including associated with the various railway workshops and with civil engineering works along the lines. Up until around the turn of the twentieth century the cranes were hand operated, and were mostly small lifting capacities, such as 5ton, 10ton and 15ton. These were mostly located at major junctions and yards throughout the state. However, by the turn of the century, steam powered cranes became readily available, most of them coming from a small select band of British Manufacturers - Cowans-Sheldon, Craven Brothers and Ransomes and Rapier. Once the new steam powered cranes filtered through the system, the old hand-operated cranes were either scrapped or banished to the far-flung corners of the system. In addition to the accident and breakdown cranes, the NSWGR bought a number of small locomotive mounted self-contained cranes of low capacity in the 4 to 7ton range - these were confined to major workshops for use internally. All cranes, whether hand or steam powered, were lumped in with a mixture of miscellaneous locomotive types under the X10 Class. The first of the new steam cranes was 1048, and entered traffic in 1909, a single 30T Cowans-Sheldon unit - originally based at Eveleigh, but later moved to Enfield. Next, a pair of 30T Craven Brothers cranes were aquired in 1912, 1049 was originally placed at Harden up until 1957, when it moved to Goulburn, 1050 was allocated to Werris Creek. In 1915, a pair of 35T Ransomes and Rapier units were bought, 1055 being allocated to Casino, and 1056 being allocated to Bathurst until 1971, when it moved to Parkes. A major increase of lifting capacity came in 1929, when a pair of 70T Craven Brothers units were bought, 1072 originally at Enfield was moved to Broadmeadow during WW2, 1073 was allocated to Enfield. Just after WW2, a pair of ex-US Army 50T Industrial Brownhoist units were obtained, 1080 placed at Junee and 1081 placed at Taree. [Note: due to lack of a suitable drawing and insufficient photo details, I have not attempted to make these cranes]. The final crane was the huge 120T Krupp-Ardelt unit bought in 1957 and numbered 1060 - this unit was allocated to Enfield. A second crane of this type was delivered in 'kit-form' but was not assembled - over the years the 'spare' unit was cannibalised for parts to keep 1060 operational. [Again, I have not attempted to make this crane]. During the late 1960's and early 1970's a number of these steam powered cranes were converted to diesel power to extend their operational life - for further details, refer to the X10 Class Intro Page.
