Prototype Notes -------------------- After building the successful Z19 class 0-6-0 goods locomotives, Beyer Peacock built the first 2-6-0 Mogul locomotives for the NSWGR, the B-205 class, later Z25 class - a total of 70 were built between 1881 and 1885. After 1911 they were reboilered with belpaire fireboxes and new wood cabs with rectangular windows. In 1923, 2531 and 2534 were fitted with superheaters and extended smokeboxes, but were the only two treated. By 1947 only 9 remained and they were relegated to country locations for branch lines and shunting. 2532 was the last in service and was withdrawn after a Tour train to Boorowa in April 1962. 2535 was sold to Corrimal Colliery (No 25) in March 1961 and worked there and at Old Bulli Colliery until sent for display at the AIS Port Kembla Steelworks Visitor Centre - it was subsequently sold to the Hunter Valley Steam Railway and Museum. 2510 is preserved at the NSW Rail Transport Museum at Thirlmere. Following the B-205 class Dubs built 25 similar locomotives as the B55 class, later Z24 class in 1885. These had steel cabs with porthole windows from new, and were rebuilt with belpaire boilers, standard smokeboxes and cast iron funnels between 1903 and 1908. During the 1930's, 12 were withdrawn and scrapped, the remainder being repaired and working similar country roles to the Z25 class. The last to be withdrawn was 2413 in November 1960. The Z24 and Z25 class locomotives were superceded by the C30T class. Some were sold to coal mines and gravel works and also Bunnerong Powerstation - 2409 and 2411 went to Nepean Sand & Gravel at North Richmond, 2406 and 2425 to Thornton Collieries, 2415 to BHP Newcastle (where it was rebuilt into an 0-6-0T), 2411 went to Waratah Colliery, and 2408, 2413, 2414 (No5) and 2423 (No4) went to Bunnerong. No 5 (ex-2414) lasted in ECNSW Bunnerong service until mid-1975. 2408 is preserved at Hunter Valley Steam Railway and Museum, 2413 is preserved at ARHS (ACT), and 2419 at the NSW Rail Transport Museum at Thirlmere.
